Hot take: I spent 20 years using mouse acceleration before I turned it off last month

I was playing Counter-Strike with my cousin who is 15 years younger than me. He watched me try to flick to a headshot and just laughed. Asked why my mouse was acting like it was drunk. I had no idea what he was talking about. Turns out mouse acceleration has been on by default in Windows since forever and I just got used to it. Turned it off in the control panel and my aim got better in about 2 days. Made me wonder what else I just accept as normal. Has anyone else had that one setting or habit they used for years that turned out to be totally wrong?

Oh man, turning off mouse acceleration was a game changer for my aim too!

Did you mess with your DPI setting too after turning off acceleration? I dropped mine from real high down to 800 and bumped my in-game sensitivity a bit, felt way more consistent in Valorant especially. Took like a week to get used to not having that floaty feel but now I can track heads way better than before.
