Got locked out of my Instagram account for 3 weeks because of a 2FA glitch

Was sitting at a coffee shop in Austin last month, tried to log into my account, and the authenticator app just showed a blank screen. No code, no nothing. I had recovery codes saved in a Google Doc, but those had expired. Instagram's support is basically a bot that asks if you tried turning it off and on again. After 18 days of submitting ID photos and waiting, an actual human finally reset it. Still don't know what caused the glitch. Has anyone else had the recovery codes just stop working?

Lost count of how many recovery codes I've had expire on me... I think I've got a graveyard of old Google Docs full of codes that decided to retire before I did. Last time I got locked out of my email it took me 12 tries to find a set that still worked, and by then I'd already changed my password like three times out of paranoia. Maybe our codes are just getting as tired of the whole process as we are.

Ngl, I've never had a single recovery code expire on me and I think it's user error.
