Bought a $60 dehumidifier for my basement last spring and all it did was raise my electric bill 20 bucks a month
The thing ran nonstop for 4 months and never dropped the humidity below 65%, so I finally got a proper one for $280 and it fixed everything in 3 days - anyone else waste money on cheap solution that just made things worse?

60 dollar unit just recirculates the damp air instead of pulling moisture out.

I used to think cheap dehumidifiers were all scams, but @nathanbennett, you might be onto something. I grabbed a 60 dollar unit from a big box store and it ran nonstop for three days - the bucket was barely half full and the room still felt sticky. It was just pulling air through a wet filter, not actually condensing water out. Now I save up for the ones that actually hook to a drain, they work way better.
