My old roommate's cat peed on my weights at our place in Boise, so now I keep everything in plastic bins

Lived with this guy Marcus for 11 months in Boise and his cat Carl peed on my squat shoes, my belt, and a 45 lb plate I left on the floor. He told me cats just do that and never once cleaned it up. I finally moved out after finding dried pee on my bench pad. Now every piece of gym gear I own lives in a sealed bin, even in my own apartment. Am I being paranoid or did anyone else have to lock stuff up because of a pet?
