Just realized the $5 DVD player from a garage sale in Fresno was better than my 4K setup for bad movies
For about 3 months I tried to make my bad movie nights look 'cinematic' with a $400 4K projector and a soundbar, but every grainy VHS rip or 240p YouTube upload looked so clean and sharp that it killed the whole vibe. My buddy Marcus finally said, 'Dude, this looks like a Netflix documentary, not a movie that was shot on a camcorder in someone's uncle's garage.' So I grabbed a $5 DVD player at a garage sale in Fresno last weekend and hooked it up to an old 19 inch tube TV I had in the closet. We watched a copy of 'Troll 2' that looked like it was filmed through a dirty fish tank, and it was the most fun we have had in a month. The fuzzy tracking lines and the weird color bleed made every bad line funnier, and nobody complained about the 'quality' once. I spent way too long chasing a 'good' picture when the whole point is that these movies should look bad. Anyone else ditch their fancy setup on purpose for bad movie night?

Man I feel this in my bones. Back in like 2009 my cousin had this beat to hell CRT in his basement and we'd watch bootleg horror tapes on it every Friday, and something about that blurry screen made even the boring parts hilarious. Then he upgraded to a flat screen and we stopped doing it, no clue why but it just wasn't the same. There's something about seeing every scratch and tracking glitch that makes you feel like you're watching a real movie the way it was meant to be seen, not some polished thing. You basically found the cheat code for fun and it only cost five bucks.
