Unpopular opinion: zip ties made my setup worse, a tangled pile worked better
I used to think a clean run of zip ties behind my desk was the goal, until I had to swap out a dead monitor arm in my apartment in Phoenix and spent 20 minutes cutting plastic off a bundle of 11 cables. My neighbor noticed me swearing through the wall and handed me a pack of velcro straps, which came apart in seconds when I needed one cord out. Now every cord behind my TV just loops loose in a basket, and swapping a single HDMI takes maybe 30 seconds instead of 10 minutes. Has anyone else gone back to loose cables on purpose, or am I just bad at planning my runs?
Tried the loose basket thing for two weeks and it was a total mess. My cat found the pile behind the TV and turned it into a toy, and one of my USB cables got chewed so bad it stopped charging my phone. Plus every time I slid the entertainment center out to vacuum, cables would snag on the legs and yank the power strip half out of the wall. Zip ties at least keep everything where I put it, and if you leave a little slack loop at each device instead of yanking them tight, you can still pull one cord free. Swapping my monitor arm took me four minutes last time, not twenty, because I labeled the ties with tape. Sounds like the real problem was wrapping them like you were shipping a package.
