PSA: I used to think those cheap hook-and-loop straps were junk until my 3 year old yanked my router off the shelf
Three years ago I set up my home office in the corner of our spare room in Tucson and just let every cord hang loose behind the desk, figuring I would deal with it someday. Last month my 3 year old crawled back there, grabbed a fistful of cables, and pulled my router off the shelf onto the tile floor, and it cracked the case. I had been using the stiff plastic zip ties on everything because they cost like $2 for a hundred at the hardware store, and I always thought fabric straps were overpriced junk for people with fancy setups. But after the router thing I bought a $9 pack of hook-and-loop straps on a whim, and the difference hit me in about ten minutes. I can move the router, unplug the monitor, or swap the printer cable without dragging the whole mess out and cutting anything. The plastic ties also had little sharp edges that were chewing into my ethernet cable right where it bent behind the desk. Now the back of my desk actually looks like something I would not be embarrassed to show, and my kid cannot yank anything loose because everything is bundled and tucked against the wall. Has anyone else made the switch from zip ties to straps, or do you have a better trick for keeping a toddler out of the cable zone?
