My uncle's workshop made me see cable mess in a whole new light

I went to help my uncle clean out his old workshop in Cleveland last summer and that place was a nightmare of tangled extension cords and old phone lines. He had this massive workbench where every power tool was plugged into one multi-strip that was hidden behind a pile of rusty saw blades. I spent a whole Saturday just pulling cords apart and labeling them with masking tape and a sharpie. Now when I look behind my own desk at home I think about how easy I have it with all these modern cord organizers. But honestly that messy workshop taught me more than any YouTube video could. What's the worst cable disaster you've ever seen in person and did you fix it up?

Betty's story about those 15 spliced extension cords made my stomach turn a little. That is the kind of thing you see in a horror movie before the place burns down at midnight. I had a similar situation at a friend's garage where they ran one thin orange cord from the house to run a fridge and a freezer, and I refused to plug anything in until we got a proper outdoor grade cord. You did the right thing unplugging half of them, that owner was asking for trouble. Sometimes people get so used to a mess they stop seeing how dangerous it really is. Good on you for taking action.

My buddy once showed up to work at a small repair shop and found the owner had spliced about 15 different extension cords together to reach a machine in the back. The whole place looked like a fire waiting to happen and I spent my lunch break unplugging half of them.

Read somewhere that daisy chaining cords is one of the top causes of workshop fires.
