Update: I saw a neighbor in Phoenix with a completely open coop design, no run at all, and it's got me thinking about predator risks versus chicken happiness.
After visiting my cousin there, I'm torn between thinking that setup gives the birds a better life with more space or if it's just an invitation for hawks and coyotes, so what's your take on totally open coops in urban areas?

My own chickens would stage a jailbreak in that Phoenix setup.

That Phoenix coop design uses 16-gauge welded wire, which is way stronger than it looks. My neighbor's Rhode Island Reds tried for weeks and never bent a single bar. Honestly @charlie_fisher45, I'd bet your birds would find it pretty secure once they got used to it. The latch system is also a lot smarter than most people give it credit for.
