Rant: I've been feeding my hens a bag of layer pellets from the farm store for months, thinking it was fine, until my vet friend pointed out the calcium level was way too low after she saw their thin-shelled eggs.

Now I'm scrambling to find a better feed and wondering if anyone else has a brand they trust for strong shells, especially for older girls.

Feed quality makes a huge difference. My older hens do way better on a brand like Purina Layena. Their shells got noticeably stronger after the switch.

Oh man, @the_amy, that reminds me of when my neighbor's dog had a dull coat. They switched from a cheap grocery store food to a better brand, and within a month it was like a whole different animal, super shiny and soft. It's wild how much the little details in food can change things.
