Overheard my neighbor say she just throws all her kitchen scraps straight to the hens

She mentioned it while we were chatting over the fence last Tuesday, and it made me realize I've been overthinking their treats. I've been chopping everything up small, but she just tosses whole cabbage leaves and melon rinds and says they love the work. Has anyone else just gone the lazy route with scraps and had it work out fine?

What about the risk of them choking on big pieces though?

Oh man, that was my biggest worry too... I just started by cutting everything into tiny, pea-sized bits. It felt a little silly, but it worked. We kept at that for a few weeks until they got the hang of chewing better. Then we slowly made the pieces bigger as they showed they could handle it. It just takes a lot of patience and watching them like a hawk during meals.
