My Rhode Island Reds were looking rough until I switched their feed
For about two months, their feathers were dull and they just seemed off, even though I was giving them a basic layer pellet from the farm store. My neighbor in Springfield said to try a brand called 'Feather Fixer' with extra protein, so I switched them over three weeks ago. The difference is crazy, their combs are bright red now and the feathers look shiny and full. Has anyone else seen a big change from just switching up the feed like that?

sage_lewis10 mentioned "just lines up with a bird's natural recovery," but honestly, with chickens, feed changes can make a huge difference pretty fast. Their bodies react quick to better nutrition, especially that extra protein for feather growth.

Sometimes a change in feed just lines up with a bird's natural recovery from something else. My flock went through a rough patch that cleared up on its own, right when I tried a new supplement. It's hard to know for sure what fixed it.

Man, I'm over here giving my girls the cheap stuff and wondering why they look like they just rolled out of a dusty barn. Maybe I should stop being such a cheapskate and actually try a decent feed for once.

Wait, you mean cheap feed with a bunch of fillers doesn't turn them into show chickens? I'm shocked, shocked I tell you! Honestly though, I made that exact mistake my first year and my girls looked like they were molting 24/7. @paige870 is spot on about the protein thing - once I switched to a 20% layer feed with some black oil sunflower seeds mixed in, the difference was literally night and day. Their combs got redder and they started laying eggs with actual hard shells again. Sometimes being cheap just ends up costing you more in the long run, right?
