My neighbor told me I was crowding my hens too much
Last spring a lady down the street said my coop had too many birds for the space. I had 8 hens in a 4x6 coop and thought that was fine. She showed me the math about needing 4 square feet per bird inside the coop. Now I have 5 hens in there and they stopped picking on each other and egg production actually went up. Has anyone else downsized their flock and seen better behavior?

Jumped right into this myself a few years back. My 8 hens in a 4x6 coop were constantly bickering and I had two that just wouldn't lay. Dropped to 5 like you did and the pecking stopped within a week. I noticed my run space mattered just as much though - they need room to stretch and scratch without bumping into each other. Your mileage may vary, but giving them more room inside really does change the whole dynamic of the flock.
