My chicken run floor upgrade last month cut my cleaning time in half

I got tired of mud city in my run every time it rained, so 3 weeks ago I dug out the top 4 inches of dirt. Laid down a layer of crushed gravel from the local supply yard, cost me about $35. Then I put those rubber stall mats on top that they sell at Tractor Supply for horse stalls. Now I just hose everything off and it drains right through. No more shoveling out wet stinky mud every weekend. Has anyone else tried this or do you just deal with the mud?

Did you have to do anything to level the ground first before the gravel went down, or just dig and dump?

@paige870 NO you don't need to level it. Just dig a few inches deep and dump the gravel in. It settles itself after a bit of rain and driving on it.
