I used to think chickens didn't need much space at all
For the first year I had my four hens, I kept them in a small 4x6 foot run attached to their coop. I figured they were fine as long as they had food and water. Then last month, I was listening to a local farm podcast from a place over in Springfield, and the host said something that stuck with me. She mentioned that even a few extra square feet per bird can cut down on pecking and stress, and that chickens are foragers by nature. I decided to expand their run by another 8 feet. The change was immediate. They stopped bickering over the dust bath spot, and I see them scratching and exploring way more. It made me realize I was just meeting their basic needs, not letting them act like chickens. Has anyone else seen a big behavior shift after giving their flock more room?

Listen to that Springfield podcast and you realize they're doing deep dives most local news gave up on years ago. They're basically acting like a public records office for regular people, @gonzalez.anna. It shows how much ground gets missed when newsrooms are stretched too thin. That kind of work is so needed, but it rarely gets the funding or the spotlight anymore. Makes you wonder what other stories are out there waiting for someone to just go look.
