I spent $300 on a heated chicken waterer and it cracked within two weeks
Everyone swears by the expensive heated bases, but mine split right down the middle after a single freeze. Has anyone else had better luck with the cheap bucket-and-submersible setups instead?

The cheap bucket and submersible setup has been way more reliable for me honestly (and it's way less painful when it finally does give out). Just make sure to get the heavy duty submersible, the little ones will fry themselves after a season or two.

The heavy duty submersibles are a solid upgrade, but you might be overestimating their lifespan a bit. In my experience, even the good ones start losing flow after about 5-6 seasons if you're running them continuously through the summer. The rubber seals and impellers just wear down over time, no way around it.
