I finally let my hens free range in the yard last month, and now I'm torn on if it's worth the risk
On one hand, they ate every tick in sight (which is great for my kids playing out there), but on the other hand, two of them got picked off by a hawk within 3 days. Has anyone else dealt with this trade-off and found a middle ground?

And honestly, losing hens to hawks is just part of letting them free range. A rooster helps a ton with lookout duty if you can get one. Have you tried adding some covered spots or brush piles for them to dart under?
