Honestly, my flock's egg count went from 3 a week to 15 after I stopped feeding them kitchen scraps.

Ngl, for like a year I was giving them all our veggie peels and old bread. Their eggs were small and they barely laid. Last month I switched to just a high-protein layer feed from Tractor Supply and nothing else. Within two weeks, every one of my six hens was laying almost daily. I guess the scraps were just filling them up with junk. Has anyone else seen a huge jump after cutting out treats?

Wow, that's a crazy jump in production. I mean, @nora10 is totally right about scraps filling them up, but I'd be careful saying they should get nothing else. A few mealworms or some scratch as a reward doesn't hurt, idk, maybe it's just me but my girls seem happier with a little variety. The key is keeping it like a tiny snack, not a meal. Their main food has to be that good layer feed for sure.

Yeah, it's a common trap. Those scraps really do just take up space in their crop. A good layer feed is 90% of their diet for a reason.

Tractor Supply feed is solid, but calling kitchen scraps junk feels a bit extreme. My hens get some scraps and still lay fine.
