A guy at the feed store in Fresno told me my hens looked bored, and he was right
I ran into him while buying scratch and he asked how many roosts I had. I said two for six hens, and he just shook his head and said boredom is why they were pecking each other's feathers. I added an old ladder and a hanging cabbage last week and the pecking mostly stopped, so now I want to know what else people hang up for their flocks.
Ha! That feed store guy knew what he was talking about. My flock was doing the same thing last spring, pulling feathers off each other, and I could not figure out why. Hung a head of lettuce on a string from the coop roof and they went nuts for it, took them two days to destroy it. Also tossed in a few old CDs on fishing line so they catch the light and spin, the girls love chasing those. A friend gave me a busted up mirror too and they will stand there staring at themselves forever, it is pretty funny to watch.
