Watch out for that shortcut near Devil's Lake I took last Tuesday

I tried a 'shortcut' I found on an old forum post to skip the main trail at Devil's Lake and ended up lost for 3 hours in a ravine with no water left. Has anyone else fallen for those bushwack recommendations that turn into a nightmare?

Did you check if that 'shortcut' was actually a game trail or an old logging road? Those are always a gamble because they dead end or wash out completely. Next time, pull the GPX file into an app like Gaia first so you can see the elevation profile before you commit.

Totally agree with @sanchez.mia on checking the elevation first - I've learned that lesson the hard way too. It's funny how we do this in other parts of life, like taking a "shortcut" in a recipe that turns a 30 minute dinner into a two hour disaster. Some things just aren't meant to be skipped.
