Just hit 500 miles on the John Muir Trail and it made me rethink my whole gear list

I always packed my 65 liter bag full for every trip, thinking I needed the extra space for comfort. But after logging that 500th mile in the Sierra Nevada, I realized I'd only actually used about 60% of what I was carrying. My 3 pound tent was the biggest waste for solo trips. What's one piece of gear you carried for years before finally leaving it behind?

Okay, but a puffy jacket is a terrible pillow. That crinkly sound would drive me nuts. I just use my actual clothes stuff sack with my spare shirt in it.

Man, that hits home lol. Carried this giant camp pillow for years, like a whole stuff sack full of fluff. It was comfy, sure, but took up so much room. Finally tried just using my puffy jacket stuffed in a fleece beanie and honestly slept just as well. Felt like a total goober for not trying it sooner.
