I spent $150 on a portable water filter and it almost got me killed

Last month on the Olympic Peninsula trail, I thought my Sawyer squeeze was fine until it clogged completely at mile 8. I had no backup and ended up drinking straight from a creek, spent the next 2 days puking my guts out in a motel. The filter had maybe 20 gallons through it, way under the rating. Anyone else had a filter fail mid-trip and have to switch to tablets or boiling?

Wait, @troy996, are you seriously asking if skipping maintenance a few times causes problems? Because I’m picturing you flushing your car’s transmission fluid once and then acting surprised when it explodes on a road trip. Backflushing is like brushing your teeth on a camping trip-skip it and you’re basically asking for a painful lesson from a creek. I backflush my Sawyer after every trip, and even then I’ve had it clog up at mile 10 of a dry trail. That 20 gallons without backflushing? Yeah, that’s a recipe for a motel barf session and a $150 paperweight.

Did you backflush it regularly?

To be honest, I've never found it made a huge difference on my machine. Do you think skipping it a few times really causes problems long term?
