I finally tried the 3-day loop in the Sawtooths everyone raves about, but the constant afternoon storms had me pinned in my tent for hours each day, so is it better to plan a shorter route or just accept the weather risk on longer trips?

After getting caught in those storms near Sawtooth Lake, I learned to check the mountain-specific forecast, not just the valley town's, but does anyone else have a go-to source for reliable alpine weather?

Mountain-Forecast.com is my go-to. They break it down by elevation. Saved my butt on a Wind River trip last year. The valley said clear, but their forecast showed a system hitting the high passes right when we'd be crossing. We waited a day and avoided a total whiteout. It's not perfect, but way better than guessing.

Wish I'd known about that site before my last trip, @jackson.sarah, I just trusted the valley forecast and got totally soaked.
