Changed my mind about water filtration after a nasty stomach bug on the JMT
I always swore by those heavy pump filters, but after 3 days of cramps near Thousand Island Lake I finally caved and tried a Sawyer Squeeze setup my buddy lent me. The weight difference was insane and filtering took half the time. Anyone else switch from pumps to squeeze bags and never look back?
Wait, did you just admit a squeeze bag is actually better than a pump? I saw someone with a Sawyer on the High Sierra Trail last year and rolled my eyes at first. Then I got stuck with a broken pump filter on day 4 and had to borrow their squeeze setup. Changed my mind pretty fast when I realized I could filter a liter in like a minute and shove the whole thing in my hip pocket. The bags are finicky if you don't dry them right, but I'll take that over lugging a pump any day.
Shove the whole thing in your hip pocket" is exactly the problem with those squeeze setups. I've had bags pop open on me mid hike and soak my whole pocket. At least with a pump you know the water's contained and you can't accidentally lose your filter. Plus pumps work better with silty water in my experience.
