Can we talk about people who race through the Appalachian Trail

I overheard a guy at a hostel in Damascus say he did the whole thing in 45 days. Rushing like that misses the point. Why even bother if you're just trying to beat some record instead of actually seeing the views?

Honestly, "why even bother" is exactly what I thought when I met a guy who bragged about doing it in 50 days. Tbh I did a section hike a few years ago and people like that just blow past all the cool stuff like the sunsets and the little trail magic moments. Ngl they treat it like a race and it kind of ruins the vibe.

Totally get that @dianab68. It's like when people speed through life and miss the good stuff just to say they finished first. That same mindset shows up everywhere, not just on trails. You see it at the grocery store with folks rushing past the local honey or the handmade stuff just to grab the quickest boxed meal. Or at work where some people brag about fitting a whole project into half the time but skipped all the teamwork and little wins along the way. They treat everything like a checklist instead of an experience, and it kind of sucks the joy out of it for everyone else. The slow way lets you actually see the sunsets and chat with the weird characters you meet, and that's what sticks with you.
