A ranger in Yosemite told me 'the best route is the one you don't see on the map.' It got me thinking about trail purism vs. exploration.

A compass is good, but you really need a topo map too. It shows the land shape so you don't walk off a cliff you couldn't see.

Sounds pretty but that's how people get lost or hurt. Stick to the marked trails so rescue teams don't have to risk their lives finding you.

That line about the best route not being on the map is so true. I always carry a compass and know how to use it, just in case a little off-trail wandering looks safe and interesting.
