Spent 3 hours troubleshooting a comm radio before I checked the squelch knob
Last Tuesday I got handed a complaint about a comm radio that kept cutting out on the ground but worked fine in the air. I pulled the unit, checked the connectors, rang out the coax, and even swapped it with a known good one from the shelf. Nothing. Then I sat in the cockpit and listened for 20 minutes straight, and the thing never dropped once. Turned out the squelch was set so tight that normal ground noise was breaking it up in the hangar, but at altitude with the engine humming it was fine. So I had two choices: write it up as no fault found and move on, or spend another hour chasing a ghost that might not exist. I picked no fault found, and the pilot was not happy about it. Has anyone else had a squelch setting cause a write-up that sent you in circles?
