Hot take: I finally get why the old guy at the hangar in Mobile was so picky about wire marking

Last month, I was troubleshooting a faulty nav light circuit on a Cessna 172, and the wiring diagram was a mess of faded pencil marks. I spent like 4 hours chasing a bad ground because someone didn't label the splices. Now I use that Brady labeler for every single connection, no matter how small. Anyone else have a simple tool that saved them a huge headache?

Ever spend half a day on a simple fix because of a missing label? I feel that. My old shop had a rat's nest of unmarked wires behind the panel. Bought a label maker with my own money after the third time tracing the same circuit. It's one of those things you don't appreciate until you've lost your mind over it.

What kind of label maker did you end up getting? I've been looking at them, but some seem like they'd melt if they got near a hot panel. Did the labels actually stick to the wire insulation long term?

Honestly all that labeling seems like overkill. A good mechanic should be able to trace a wire without a sticker holding their hand. Half the time those labels just fall off or get greasy and you can't read them anyway. It's faster to just learn the system and use a multimeter than to rely on some plastic tag that probably won't last.
