Chose to defer a squawk on a CRJ200 pitot heat at 4am in Boise, and it came back to bite me
Two winters back I had a CRJ200 come in for a quick turn in Boise and the right pitot heat light stayed on just a hair longer than normal on the test. I could either write it up and ground the plane for at least two hours waiting on a part, or sign it off as within limits and let dispatch catch the next station. I picked the fast option because we were already 40 minutes behind and the pressure from ops was real. Three days later the same tail diverted into Spokane with a blocked pitot and the crew got a bad airspeed indication at 12,000 feet. Nobody got hurt but the FAA came asking questions and my sign-off got pulled apart line by line. The heat element tested fine on the bench, which almost made it worse, because it meant I had missed an intermittent connector pin that only acted up in the cold. Has anyone else had a deferral come back around on them like that, and how did you handle the paperwork side after?
