Paid a broker $150 deposit for a car move from Fresno to Denver and the driver never showed
Booked with a broker 5 weeks ago, put down a $150 deposit, and got quoted $950 total for my Civic from Fresno to Denver. Pickup window came and went, then the driver texted at 11pm saying he was 3 states away with no ETA. Broker said they'd refund me minus a $50 "admin fee" which I'm still fighting over a month later. On the other side, a guy at my work swears going direct to a carrier off a load board saved him $200, but he also sat 9 days waiting for a truck. Which one is the lesser evil here, broker with the deposit or rolling the dice on the boards?

A $50 admin fee on a $150 deposit is annoying but it's not exactly a life-ruining amount here. Five weeks of waiting and a driver texting at 11pm from three states away is bad, sure, but you got most of your money back and you learned that broker is a joke. Your coworker saved $200 on the boards but sat around 9 days, which for a lot of people means missing work or renting a car in the meantime, so that "savings" can disappear fast. Neither option is some huge scam, they both just kind of stink in different ways. Pick whichever one you can deal with and move on, because fighting over 50 bucks for a month costs you more in stress than the money is worth.
