Update: I thought the $50 deposit for a broker was a scam, but after my move from Dallas to Portland I'm eating my words
Two years ago I tried to ship a car myself and got burned by a lowball quote that jumped $400 the day before pickup, so I swore off brokers. Fast forward to this spring, I paid a $50 deposit to a company with a real DOT number and they locked in $1,150 for my Crosstrek from Dallas to Portland, which actually matched the final bill. The guy even sent me the carrier's MC number and insurance before I paid a dime. I still think most deposits are a red flag, but this one was legit. What's your rule for telling the good brokers from the bad ones?
Why does everyone want a hard and fast rule for this stuff? A $50 deposit is not some magic test that tells you if a broker is good or bad. Plenty of straight up scammers have DOT numbers and will happily email you a fake MC number too, none of that is hard to fake. The real thing that saved you was the quote staying at $1,150 and the carrier info showing up before you paid, and a deposit company can still pull that off and then ghost you later. So no, one good story does not mean deposits are fine now, it just means you got lucky with one company.
