Pro tip: the FMCSA says only about 5% of cars get shipped by rail, so don't fall for the rail pitch
I was poking around on the FMCSA site for something else and ran into a stat that kind of floored me. Less than 5% of vehicles moved interstate actually go by train, but almost every broker I called in Dallas quoted me a "rail rate" first anyway. That number told me the rail option is mostly a sales tactic for open carriers looking to pad the quote, not some cheaper magic lane. I ended up going with a small family carrier out of Oklahoma for $1,150 on a 1,400 mile run. Did any of you get pushed the rail angle and just say no?
Yeah every broker tries the rail thing first, it's like a script they all read from. I just cut them off and ask for the drive-away price up front, saves everyone time lol. That $1,150 for 1,400 miles is a solid rate too, you did good going with the small carrier.
