Used to hand the shop $900 for a timing belt, now I watch YouTube in my garage and do it for $140
My warranty ran out at 60k miles so I started buying my own parts from RockAuto and watching videos instead of paying dealer prices. Now I'm wondering if I'm actually saving money or just one stripped bolt away from a $3,000 mistake, anybody else go down this road?
How many jobs have you done at this point where you had to redo something or buy a second part because the first attempt went sideways? That's the real number that tells you if you're ahead or just getting lucky.
