Unpopular opinion: Letting your brother-in-law borrow tools is a fast way to lose your good ones

I learned this the hard way when my brother-in-law asked to use my socket set for his truck. I said yes thinking it was no big deal. He brought it back a week later with half the sockets missing and the ratchet handle all greasy and busted. I had to buy a new set out of my own pocket because I need reliable gear for work. Now I keep my tools locked up and tell family they need to rent their own. It sounds harsh, but when your income depends on having the right equipment, you can't risk it. Save yourself the headache and set clear rules early on.

A locked toolbox saved my own family fights.

Seriously, locking your tools is the only way to go with family around. Like @kai327 said, people don't get how much this stuff costs, and a lock stops the "borrowing" before it starts, lol. It saved my sanity last year when my brother-in-law kept eyeing my socket set.

My cousin did the same thing to my 3/8 drive set last summer. How do people not understand these things cost money?
