Rant: I keep seeing people use a 3/8-inch drive on a crank pulley bolt and it makes me wince.
I watched a guy at the parts store loaner tool counter try it yesterday, and he said "it'll be fine" right before the socket split in half (which, you know, it wasn't).

Oh man, that sound is the worst. You just know that "it'll be fine" is always the kiss of death. I've seen those thin-wall sockets just explode under that kind of torque, sending shrapnel everywhere. Some lessons are learned the hard way.

My uncle Jerry tried that exact move on his old Ford pickup last summer. He swore his 3/8 drive impact socket was "industrial grade" right up until it gave up with a loud pop. We spent the next two hours fishing socket fragments out of his driveway gravel. The look on his face was pure defeat.
