Old timer showed me valve lash feeler gauge trick after 20k miles of tapping

Been doing my own valve adjustments on my 4Runner for years, always set them to spec, always got a light tap that I just figured was normal. Last week I helped this retired mechanic, Bob from Phoenix, with his Subaru and he watched me do mine. He said my intake clearance was too loose by 0.002 and handed me a different feeler gauge, said to pull it through and feel for the drag point. Did that and 30 minutes later my engine sounds completely different, way quieter at idle. I drove 20k miles with that tap thinking it was just how these motors run. Has anyone else found the paper drag method works better than the go/no-go way? Makes me wonder what else I've been doing half assed this whole time.
