I finally stopped fighting the torque specs after one phone call

I used to just gut tighten head bolts on my 96 F-150 rebuild because I figured close enough, then a buddy who runs a diesel shop in Tulsa chewed me out saying 'torque is the whole point.' I borrowed his click-style wrench and did all 10 bolts in sequence at 65 ft-lbs, and the engine started on the first crank with zero leaks. Anyone else have a moment where a simple correction made you question years of bad habits?

Torque specs are just a starting point. A good wrench feel tells you more about the bolt than a number ever will. I've done plenty of heads where I went a quarter turn past spec because the bolt felt soft, and never had a failure. That buddy in Tulsa got lucky with his torque wrench, but some of us learned from old timers who did it by hand and made engines that ran for 200k miles. Click-style wrenches also go out of calibration, so you're just trusting a different kind of guess. If you know your gaskets and your iron, close enough is usually dead on.
