Hot take: painting a rusty frame hides way more than it fixes
I bought a 2002 F-150 last summer that looked clean in the photos, but when I crawled under it, the frame had been painted over heavy scale. Three months later I poked through a spot near the rear spring hanger and found a hole you could fit your thumb through. Has anyone else had a used truck turn into a rust repair nightmare after the paint job looked too nice?

Your story about poking through that painted frame makes me admit I used to think painting over rust was a good idea.
