A retired mechanic from Tulsa told me to stop using a torque wrench on lug nuts, and I'm starting to think he was right
Last Friday I was at a tire shop in Tulsa picking up a set of takeoffs for my 2012 F-150 when this older guy named Ray, who ran the place for 30 years, watched me torque my wheels to 150 ft-lbs with my click wrench. He walked over and said, "Son, you're gonna stretch those studs one day. Just snug em with the impact and check em by hand." I kind of laughed it off because every manual I've read says use a torque wrench. But then he showed me a bin of snapped studs he's pulled off customer trucks over the last few years (mostly from shops over-torquing with a 1/2 inch gun on the highest setting). He said in his whole career he never had a wheel come off from a good hand snug and a recheck after 50 miles. Now I'm second guessing myself every time I pull out my wrench. Anyone else here been taught the old school way by a guy like Ray, or am I overthinking what he said?
