That cheap paint gun from Harbor Freight actually laid down a better finish than my $600 SATA.
I borrowed a buddy's $30 purple gun to paint a fender last month and the orange peel was way less than what I get from my expensive setup, any of you guys had good luck with those budget guns or was it just a fluke?

Respectfully, that's a fluke. Those cheap guns spray fine the first few times but they fall apart fast. The threads strip, seals dry out, and the internal parts just aren't machined right. You're lucky if the needle doesn't start sticking after five paint jobs. A $600 SATA will still spray the same ten years from now. That little purple gun won't make it through a full project without something going wrong. Temporary fix for a one-off job, but not a long term solution.

Man that's wild but honestly I'm not surprised. I've seen those cheap guns work miracles for guys who know how to adjust the fan and pressure right. Your buddy's setup must have been dialed in perfect or maybe the cheap gun just has a better spray pattern for what you were doing. Orange peel is a pain and if a $30 gun fixes it I say run with it until it breaks. Sometimes the expensive stuff is just overengineered and doesn't actually make the paint lay down better.
