Rant: An old timer in a Spokane shop told me to always hand-sand the last 10% of a filler job

He said the vibration from a DA sander can loosen the bond at the edges if you go all the way. Anyone still do this, or is it just outdated practice now?

Old guy was onto something. Modern fillers bond better, but vibration still travels. A quick hand sand at the edge is cheap insurance.

Tried it on my deck. No cracks after two winters.

Saw a blog post where a guy tested fillers with a dial indicator and found that sanding the edge down flush cut vibration by like 40% compared to leaving a ridge. Made sense when you think about how any bump just catches and amplifies movement. Your mention of hand sanding is key though, power sanders heat up the filler and mess with the bond if you go too fast.
