My old mentor at the shop in Reno swore by guide coat on every single panel, thought it was a waste of time for 3 years
When I started doing body work at a shop off 4th Street in Reno, this older painter named Dennis kept pushing me to spray guide coat on everything, even panels that looked dead straight to me. I figured it was a crutch for guys who could not block sand right, so I skipped it on a silver Camry fender and thought I nailed it. Two days later the sun hit that fender at an angle and I could see every low spot and scratch I missed, looked like a topo map. Boss made me redo the whole thing on my own time, cost me a Saturday and about $80 in materials. I started using guide coat after that and found stuff I never would have caught, especially on dark colors where flaws hide under the lights. Dennis never said I told you so, he just handed me a can and walked off. Curious if anyone here skips guide coat on certain jobs or do you just eat the extra 10 minutes every time?
I used to skip it too, figured I could eyeball everything just fine. Then a black door got me and I ate a whole Sunday redoing it, so now the can comes out even when I swear the panel is straight.
My buddy swore he could eyeball it too and ended up redoing a whole wall of cabinets twice. Now he checks every single panel before the can even comes out.
