I used to block out doors with masking tape every single time, now I just use magnetic sheets for small repairs
Back in 2019 I spent 20 minutes taping off a door jam for a tiny rock chip repair, then a buddy showed me how a cheap magnetic sheet from Harbor Freight covers the whole area in 10 seconds. It works great on steel panels but I'm stuck on aluminum doors and plastic bumpers where magnets won't stick. How do you guys handle quick coverage without tape on those non-magnetic surfaces?

Actually tape gives you way more control for feathering edges and getting crisp lines on complex curves. Magnets can leave gaps on door jambs that let overspray bleed through and ruin your work. For aluminum and plastic you're already out of luck anyway.

Wait wait wait, you're telling me you can even use magnets on aluminum or plastic? Like, they just stick to nothing on those materials, right? That would be a total nightmare if someone actually tried that and thought it would hold. I gotta say, I'm kind of shocked people are even trying magnets for this kind of work, especially on door jambs where the fit is so tight. Tape seems like the obvious choice for me, even if it takes a little more time to get it right.
