Heard a painter say something about masking tape that got me thinking

I was dropping off a fender at a shop on Tuesday and overheard one of their painters telling a new guy to never pull tape across a panel, always lift it back on itself at an angle. Said it keeps the paint from ever lifting at the edge when you peel. I've been doing body work for about 4 years now and I always just yank it off however, never had a huge issue but now I'm second guessing. Anyone else been taught the same trick or think it's just old school habit?

My buddy who does collision work swears by the same thing, said he learned it back in the 90s from an old timer. Honestly I never gave it much thought either until he yelled at me for doing it wrong on his project car. Now I do the angle lift every time just to be safe, it really does feel cleaner somehow.
