Heard a painter quote a prep job that made no sense
Tuesday I was picking up supplies at Keystone in Denver and overheard this guy telling a customer $700 to prep a bumper for repaint. No sanding details, no feathering mention, just a flat number. Took me a second to realize he was charging for a full strip and primer when the car only had light scuffs. If you don't write out the steps in your estimate, you're leaving money on the table or setting yourself up for a comeback when the job fails. Anyone else run into shop quotes like that and wonder how they stay in business?

A flat $700 for a bumper prep with zero breakdown? That's wild. You're right, if he's not listing the steps, he's either guessing or hiding something. I honestly don't get how a shop survives on quotes like that, the first time a customer goes to another shop and sees an itemized list, they're going to feel ripped off. But hey, maybe he's just banking on people who don't ask questions. That's a risky game with paint.
