Took my sled out on the lake ice after 4 days of solid freezing and it cracked like crazy underneath me

Everyone says wait for a solid week of cold but I went out on 5 inches of ice and it held for 10 minutes then started spidering right under my skis. Scared me straight, anyone else cut their ice riding way too short and get lucky?

Northern Wisconsin here, and I'll respectfully disagree. 4 days of solid freezing below zero can build good ice in sheltered bays, it's the wind and snow that mess things up. I've been out on 4 inches of clear black ice after a cold snap and it held my truck fine, but slush ice or snow-covered ice takes way longer to get safe. Sounds like you hit some bad ice, not that the time frame was wrong.
