TIL a warmer break-in can save your sled's engine
I always thought you had to run a new engine hard right out of the gate to seat the rings. Then last week I rebuilt my old Arctic Cat and followed a buddy's advice to keep it under 3000 RPM for the first 50 miles. The difference in how smooth it runs now is night and day compared to my last rebuild where I just hammered it. No smoke, no weird noises, just solid power across the band. Has anyone else switched their break-in method after a bad experience?

My first rebuild was a 1998 Polaris 500 and I ran it like I stole it from the get go. That thing smoked like a chimney for two seasons before I finally gave up and tore it down again. The rings never seated right and I had blowby out the breather. After that I talked to an old timer who builds snowcross motors and he told me the exact same thing your buddy said. Keep it under 3000 for the first tank and then do a few gentle pulls up to 4000 after that. I've done it on my last three builds now and every single one came out with great compression and no smoke. It's not just about saving the engine either the rings actually seat better when you let them wear in slow.
