Heard the same thing from an old mechanic who wouldn't touch a belt unless it had 100 miles on it first. Always wondered if it actually matters or if they just like messing with people.

Yeah @wade558, I mean that 100 mile thing is kinda close but not quite right. New belts don't need a specific mileage, they need heat cycles to seat properly. The rubber needs to warm up and cool down a few times so it can mold into the pulley grooves without glazing over. If you just slap one on and romp on it, you'll get that slick shiny surface and it'll start squealing within a week.
