Snowmageddon weekend on the trail near Munising, never again on a rental

Went up to Munising last weekend and the snow was so deep my rental Skandic kept bogging down in the fresh powder, had to winch it out twice in one day. The locals were ripping past on their own setups and I just felt stupid. Has anyone else had a rental fail on them exactly when the conditions get good?

Heard the rental guys up there keep the throttles capped so tourists dont blow the belts, that powder eats cheap machines alive.
