Just found out my 4-wheeler tires are 7 years older than I thought they were
Was pulling the bead off a rear tire last night to patch a leak and noticed the DOT code. Turns out those "like new" tires I bought from a guy on Facebook Marketplace in June are actually from 2016. No wonder they felt a bit hard in the cold mornings. Got any tricks for checking tire age without pulling the wheel off in the dark?

Flip the tire over and look at the back side of the sidewall for the DOT code. It's stamped in there on most tires, you don't always need to pull the bead to see it. If it's hidden behind the rim, just shine a flashlight at an angle.

That might work on some newer tires but older ones or cheaper brands don't always have the DOT code stamped that clearly... I've had tires where the rubber is so worn down or dirty you can't read it even with a flashlight. Plus you're assuming someone can actually see the back side of the sidewall without taking the tire off the car completely. Not everyone has the tools or the arm strength to do that without a jack and a lot of cursing. I'd rather just pull the bead and inspect it properly than miss the code and end up with the wrong tire size.
